His Excellency Dr. Sultan Al Jaber is the UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and a member of the UAE Federal Cabinet. He also serves as the Managing Director and CEO of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), and COP28 President and UAE's Special Envoy for Climate Change.
Since the establishment of the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT) in 2020, HE Dr. Al Jaber has led the ministry and played a pivotal role in steering the growth of the UAE's industrial sector. He spearheads initiatives designed to enhance the sector's investment attractiveness and promote the adoption of advanced technologies to position the UAE as a global hub for future industries. In 2024, the industrial sector became the second-largest contributor to the UAE's non-oil GDP, valued at AED 205 billion.
- In 2023, His Excellency was appointed President of the 28th session of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in 2023, during which HE Dr. Al Jaber coordinated the efforts of over 200 countries in response to the findings of the first global stocktake on progress toward the goals of the Paris Agreement. COP28 resulted in the historic UAE Consensus, which encompasses the most ambitious and comprehensive outcomes for climate negotiations since the Paris Agreement. Furthermore, under his leadership, the Presidency Action Plan successfully raised over $85 billion in new financing commitments for climate action. ALTERRA, the world’s largest private fund aimed at catalyzing investments in climate solutions, was launched.
- Prior to that, in November 2020, HE Dr. Al Jaber was appointed as the UAE’s Special Envoy for Climate Change, a role he previously held from 2010 to 2016 while championing the UAE’s renewable energy agenda through Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s clean energy developer.
- From 2013 to 2020, HE Dr. Al Jaber served as Minister of State and Member of the UAE Federal Cabinet. Drawing on his extensive experience in both the public and private sectors, he oversaw the developing and strengthening of geopolitical, economic, social, and cultural partnerships. Additionally, he coordinated Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements (CEPAs) with various countries, furthering the UAE's global diplomatic and economic relations.
- Since his appointment as CEO of ADNOC in 2016, HE Dr. Al Jaber has led a comprehensive transformation of the company, in alignment with the UAE’s strategic directives. He introduced initiatives to improve efficiency, enhance performance, boost flexibility, and increase profitability, while fostering a more commercially focused approach. Under his leadership, ADNOC achieved several strategic milestones, including entering global capital markets for the first time, completing the first-ever IPO of an ADNOC business (ADNOC Distribution).
- Before joining ADNOC, HE Dr. Al Jaber served as CEO of the energy platform at Mubadala, the strategic investment arm of the Government of Abu Dhabi.
- In 2006, he was entrusted by UAE leadership to establish Masdar, where he became CEO and continues to serve as Chairman, overseeing its strategic direction.
- In 2009, he successfully led Masdar’s efforts in securing Abu Dhabi as the headquarters for the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), an intergovernmental organization supporting countries in their transition to sustainable energy.
- In addition, HE Dr. Al Jaber has held multiple leadership roles and advisory positions in key areas. In July 2020, he was appointed Chairman of the Emirates Development Bank, which supports the UAE's sustainable economic and social development by offering financial services. And in December 2020, he was appointed as a board member of the Supreme Council for Financial and Economic Affairs in Abu Dhabi.
- HE Dr. Al Jaber serves as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, the world’s first graduate-level AI research university located in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi. Additionally, he is a board member of Emirates Global Aluminum, the largest aluminum producer in the world.
- HE Dr. Al Jaber served as Chairman of Abu Dhabi (AD) Ports Company from 2009 to 2019, during which he oversaw the development of Abu Dhabi’s port infrastructure strategy.
- In 2011, HE Dr. Al Jaber was appointed to the High-Level Group on Sustainable Energy for All, established by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
- The following year, he received the United Nations Champion of the Earth award, recognizing outstanding visionaries and leaders in sustainability.
- In 2013, he was honored with the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
- In 2019, HE Dr. Al Jaber received a lifetime achievement award from His Excellency Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, in recognition of his contributions to the energy sector, including building bridges to emerging Asian economies and reshaping traditional energy business models.
- In 2021, he was named the Energy Executive of the Year by Energy Intelligence for his pivotal role in supporting the development of the energy sector during the global energy transition.
- In 2024, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, awarded HE Dr. Al Jaber the Order of the Union for his leadership in delivering the historic UAE Consensus.
