Abu Dhabi, March 16, 2022: The Steering Committee for Standardization and Metrology, formed under the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT), has held its first meeting. Chaired by His Excellency Omar Suwaina Al Suwaidi, Undersecretary of MoIAT and Chairman of the Committee, the agenda included ways to modernize the ecosystem of technical committees and teams, and their work mechanisms.
The Steering Committee is responsible for developing and formulating UAE standards, technical regulations and laws. It also debates the operational plans of technical committees and teams to develop the UAE’s technical standards and regulations for 2022. The Steering Committee’s work is seen as a key means of driving national initiatives to bolster the industrial sector and enhance the competitiveness of UAE products locally and globally.
Major General Dr. Ahmed Naser Al Raisi, Inspector General at the Ministry of Interior, was chosen as the Committee’s Vice Chairman. Its formation constitutes an essential step in realizing MoIAT’s initiative to engage the government’s supervisory authorities in developing the standards and metrology ecosystem, while promoting the industrial empowerment approach throughout various teams and standards technical committees.
His Excellency Omar Al Suwaidi emphasized that MoIAT’s ability to coordinate and integrate its partners, including federal and local government agencies, directly affects the development of policies, laws and programs that boost the growth of national industries and enhance their competitiveness.
His Excellency clarified that the ministry’s approach creates a conducive and attractive business environment for local and global industrial investors, while stimulating innovation and the adoption of advanced technology in industrial systems and solutions. This, in turn, enhances the competitiveness of UAE products in local and foreign markets, and ensures high-quality products are delivered across the UAE’s various markets.
His Excellency highlighted the Committee’s vital role in supporting the development trajectory of UAE industry, while enhancing this sector’s national added value. The Committee's actions will support the nation’s transformation into a regional and global hub for future industries, in line with MoIAT’s National Strategy for Industry and Advanced Technology.
In its inaugural meeting, the Committee evaluated plans and initiatives under MoIAT’s Standards and Legislation Sector to engage the industrial sector in developing standards, laws and technical regulations in the UAE. MoIAT believes in an approach based on partnership, development and coordination with the relevant regulatory and industrial entities, as they play an important role in articulating national standards and technical regulations that meet market requirements and needs, both locally and globally.
The Committee discussed MoIAT’s plan to restructure national technical committees for standards and their scope of work, as well as its plans for developing UAE and GCC standards. These plans will help improve the quality of national industrial products, while meeting health, safety and environmental requirements.
The meeting also revised the resolution that formed the Committee and set its terms of reference, which included supervising and following up on technical committees and teams, evaluating and approving plans and programs in line with defined procedures, and recommending the adoption of draft standard specifications, technical legislation and mandatory regulations developed by technical committees and teams.
The meeting was attended by Steering Committee members from: the Ministry of Health and Prevention; the Ministry of Economy; the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment; the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security; the Abu Dhabi Agriculture & Food Safety Authority, the Central Testing Laboratory within the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council; Dubai Industries & Exports; Dubai Municipality; Sharjah City Municipality; the Ajman Municipality & Planning Department; Ras Al Khaimah Municipality; and Fujairah’s Department of Industry and Economy.
